Hotel near Big Ben London
A visit to London without seeing Big Ben would not be complete. Big Ben has been used in countless films and television shows to set the scene in London and in 2008 was found to be most popular landmark in the United Kingdom. Located on the bank of the Thames River, Big Ben actually is the nickname of just the bell contained within the tower but is commonly used to describe the clock and tower. The tower is called Elizabeth Tower and is found at the north end of the Palace of Westminster in London. “Big Ben” is the largest four-faced chiming clock in the world and was completed in 1858.
Big Ben is renowned for its accuracy, even working through the London Blitz of World War 2. If the tower looks to be leaning you are not mistaken. Excavation works for the Jubilee Line Extension and the construction of Westminster tube station in the late 90s has caused the tower to list so much that it can be seen with the naked eye.
To get to the Big Ben from Flemings Mayfair Hotel and Apartments take the Jubilee Underground Line one stop from Green Park Station to Westminster and then follow the signs to Big Ben. Head onto Westminster Bridge to fit Big Ben in frame and don’t forget to look the other way to see The London Eye.
