The Olympic Countdown is well and truly on its way, with just 78 days to go until the opening ceremony. Thoroughly in the spirit, GM Chris Penn recently tried his hand (literally) at a sport he was sure to excel in…

At last a sport that I was destined to compete in – volleyball. Whilst I don’t have the most amazing flexibility, I certainly have the height to take on this fast paced sport. It is surprisingly hard to serve overarm and not hit the net or send the ball into the changing rooms, but I guess that with practice it becomes easier. Volleyball first appeared in the 1964 Tokyo Olympic Games but the roots of the sport date back to the 1890s. Cuba dominated the womens sport for some eight years, winning three Olympic gold medals between 1992 and 2000. The venue for this year’s event is Earl’s Court and 12 teams in total are represented.
