Selfridges is one of the most famous departments stores in the world, visited by over 5 million people every year. It’s renowned for everything from food to fashion and beauty, as well as its unique creative window displays. That’s why we’re featuring it as the first part of our Shopping installment of the latest Mayfair Attractions Series.
Selfridges, on Oxford Street, was founded by Harry Gordon Selfridge and first opened its doors on March 15, 1909. Mr Selfridge defined a new shift in shopping, creating an exciting, theatrical experience for people visiting his store. Selfridges always showcased the last products and trends, stocking products from the latest beauty items to new imports like pogo sticks.
During the First World War women took up jobs left vacant by men, cleaning windows, driving delivery vans and kept the store’s huge boilers going. Over the following years the store continued to grow in both prestige and size, with further stores opening in Sheffield and Leeds. A multi-millionaire who revolutionised shopping, Harry Gordon Selfridge died peacefully in his sleep in 1947 at the age of 91.
Today, Selfridges continues to champion Harry Gordon Selfridge’s passion for creativity and innovation, never missing a beat.
