With Flemings Mayfair, 4 star deluxe hotel, just a few steps from the finish line of the third stage at the Tour de France, we felt this was an event not to be missed. Therefore our afternoon consisted of soaking up the atmosphere at the Fan Park, exploring the various stands and wondering about the crowds at The Mall before finding a spot to watch the 197 cyclists fly past for their victory.
The 2014 Tour de France route began at Cambridge and stretched 155km through Essex and Greater London before approaching central London for the sprint finish. The Tour de France London organised a Fan Park in Green Park to celebrate the occasion. The park was filled with hundreds of cycling fans enjoying the sunshine with the Tour de France playing on the huge outdoor cinema screen. There was entertainment galore with buskers, food and drink tents, exhibitors and musicians.
Along with thousands of others we wanted to see the famous cyclists pass by along The Mall. After exploring Green Park we headed towards Buckingham Palace to find a space before the Tour arrived. In true English style the rain began about 45 minutes before; as we were positioned on the last bend going onto the straight of The Mall this caused a lot of conversation about the roads becoming slippy and possibilities of crashes. However the rain did calm down just before their appearance and the riders afterwards did say they were careful around the last corners knowing the slippery conditions.
The Tour de France 2014 London did not disappoint! We all knew when the cyclists were getting close as you could hear the roar of cheers echoing down the streets! It was such a great experience and we had a fantastic view straight down The Mall. The famous cyclists flew past at great speed with the buzz from the spectators at its height.
Over one million people were said to line the streets of London ensuring the cyclists had a grand welcoming to London. Now we will sit tight and watch the tour unfold on TV, come on Chris Froome!
